It’s best not to use one for more than a few hours at a time in tandem with window insulation, solar heat, and extra layers of clothing. Still, Thom advises against running a space heater for an entire day due to the cost: the nonprofit utility service Silicon Valley Power has estimated that running one just during work hours can add $30 to $40 (PDF) to your monthly electric bill. “Line up the space heater so it’s directly pointed at you and close doors to keep the warm air in.” “They work most efficiently when pointed at one or two people in a smaller area,” says Thom, who co-wrote our guide to the best space heaters. The infrared technology in space heaters is designed to heat people and objects, not space, so they’re best used as a spot treatment for situations like warding off a chill in a drafty home office. Use a space heater (wisely, and not too much) So in addition to potentially saving money on gas, using countertop appliances you already own instead of your gas oven may have added health and safety benefits. Something to note about your gas appliances: The Consumer Product Safety Commission stated in January 2023 that it is planning to strengthen voluntary safety standards on new gas stoves. And pressure-cooking a stew for one hour in an Instant Pot uses less electricity than simmering something on the stove for hours.” (The energy savings compared with gas ranges or ovens is harder to measure, since the relative costs of the two energy sources can vary from region to region.) The Department of Energy reports that convection ovens and toasters use “one-third to one-half as much energy as a full-sized oven,” and it recommends “using the microwave oven when possible,” as well as using an electric kettle to heat water, which is faster and more energy efficient than your giant water heater. “For instance, reheating food in a toaster oven rather than your full oven saves you from preheating all that extra space. “If you already own smaller electric appliances like a toaster oven, air fryer, rice cooker, or an electric pressure cooker such as the Instant Pot, consider using them for certain tasks instead of your larger electric oven or electric range,” says Marilyn Ong, supervising editor for kitchen coverage. Another seasonal chore not to skip: removing your windows’ screens until spring some evidence suggests that they block substantial amounts of passive solar heat from entering your home. Who forgets to wash their windows as part of their housecleaning routine? (Most people, quite possibly.) Jon notes that regularly removing dirt, dust, and grime from your windowpanes is an easy way to allow more light (and thus more heat) into your home during the day. Keep windows clean and remove the screens Senior staff writer Rachel Wharton tucks folded towels or blankets along windowsills and the bottoms of doors. Staff writer and Bostonian Thom Dunn recommends the “classic New England move” of using a hair dryer to shrink plastic wrap over the gaps on your windows. For an even easier way to insulate windows, we recommend double-celled blackout shades but there are a few super-cheap shortcuts that can also get the job done. Deal with drafty windows and doorsĪpplying weather stripping around old windows and door frames can improve your home’s insulation, but doing so can be expensive and time-consuming (although if you decide to DIY it we recommend using Frost King's 0.25-inch Silicone Weatherseal which is relatively affordable). Regularly removing dirt, dust, and grime from your windowpanes is an easy way to allow in more light (and thus more heat) during the day. When late afternoon rolls around, close curtains and shades to keep the heat in. Get into the habit of opening window treatments in the morning (especially where you receive direct sunlight) to let as much sun into your house as possible, says Jon Chase, editor of our smart-home coverage. Open and close curtains, shades, and blinds strategicallyĭon’t leave your windows untouched! A Department of Energy study found that “75% of residential window coverings remain in the same position every day,” representing missed opportunities to conserve home heating and take advantage of heat from the sun. You’ve probably been nagged by a loved one to turn off the lights when you leave a room, but here, Wirecutter experts offer several other pain-free (and often cost-free) suggestions that take the sting out of your monthly bills. While smart bulbs, low-flow showerheads, smart thermostats, and other energy-saving devices help reduce your utility bills, tweaking some of your daily habits can lower them from a few bucks a month to as much as a few hundred dollars a year, often with little to no upfront investment. Chances are you’re spending more to heat your home this winter, which means, you may also be looking for ways to save on your utility bills. The risk/reward system is clever in concept but because movement is slippery and contact is imprecise it falters. Since you have to get up right next to them to light them on fire, most of your damage is likely going to be incurred while trying to ignite the undead rather than in fending them off. Running through a lightly dispersed crowd of zombies with your torch out feels like rolling a dice, as hit detection is somewhat unclear, and it’s difficult to tell when a zombie is going to hit you until it’s already happened. Naturally, there are also different types of zombies, like ones that explode on contact, ones that charge straight at you, and ones with fast, irregular movement patterns.Īll of these concepts work well in tandem and unite to form a challenging experience, but the fact is that Burn Zombie Burn’s physical mechanics just don’t quite feel right. Your combos and upgrades get reset when you die, so staying alive longer usually results in exponentially larger scores. Build up three different weapon combos and you can press a switch to activate a change in the environment. Each weapon type also builds up a combo bonus bar if you continue killing zombies with the same weapon in quick succession. There are a few other ideas that keep you on your toes – dynamite can be used to take out a lot of zombies at once, and by killing zombies that are on fire you can earn upgrades to your dynamite. You have to set zombies on fire to build up a combo, but the higher your combo the more dangerous things get for you – not to mention that burning zombies do eventually burn away. Thus, the game’s core mechanic revolves around a balancing act. Burning zombies move faster and deal more damage, but for each zombie that is ignited, your score multiplier increases by one. However, by holding down your ‘Torch’ button/key you whip out a torch which can be used to light zombies ablaze. There are a few different modes that alter your approach somewhat but the goal is the same overall: kill zombies, don’t die. It’s bare bones as a concept and is really more of an arcade game than anything else. Players run around, weaving around scrambling zombies and grabbing pickups while destroying them to rack up a high score. Gameplay takes place across a handful of confined maps with different layouts and weapon spawn points. The game uses a specific mechanic to try and keep things fresh – lighting zombies up without destroying them is beneficial, so long as you can keep Bruce, the Elvis-like, jive-talking hero, alive. Burn Zombie Burn is trying to appeal to me with these ingredients by imitating so many top-down zombie destruction simulators that have come before it. I love killing zombies – un-killing them? Re-killing them? Best not to think too hard on that one. Continued abuse of our services will cause your IP address to be blocked indefinitely.I like zombies. ‘In normal playing, the correct amount of finger pressure is always as little as possible – in other words, just enough to make the tone entirely pure. To obtain a pizzicato note which will carry, the string must be firmly pulled with the fleshy part of the right hand in a direction to the right of the player at an angle of about 10 degrees to the fingerboard. The result will be a note which sounds dead. It is not good enough to simply twang the strings. Joan Jeanrenaud, former cellist of the Kronos Quartet, The Strad, June 2004ĭictionaries of music vary, but the majority explain that pizzicato is an Italian word meaning ‘pinched’ and from what we frequently hear in concerts and recitals it would seem that some string players interpret the definition literally and produce a pinched tone instead of a richly vibrant tone. Flesh can be used to our advantage but don’t forget the nails’ Next, consider how you will pluck you can pull the string to one side or the other, lift up, or push down. Most often we do this between the fingerboard and the bridge, but there are other options, such as close to the bridge to get a tight, non-resonating sound or on the fingerboard for a softer, more ringing tone. One of the choices you have with pizzicato is where on the string you pluck. We have the ability to produce as many colours in pizzicato as we do when we use the bow. Within the musical context, however, there are a variety of reasons that pizzicato is used and therefore we need to find different ways to pluck. Many cellists feel that pizzicato is simply plucking the string and they give little thought as to how to do so. Explore more Technique articles like this in The Strad Playing Hub In order to win, the losing side that only has a king has to have some way of moving that it wouldn’t cause a stalemate, and the only way this is happening is if there is another pawn or pieces left. However since stalemate exists it really wouldn’t result in a win, which is why it is impossible to checkmate since the best is only stalemate. Theoretically speaking, the only way to checkmate with two knights is to drive the enemy king to the corner and trap it, such in a way where it cannot move so the other knight can deliver a checkmate. This is because it is literally impossible to deliver a checkmate in this condition (if the enemy king doesn’t have another pawn / piece), it has been well analyzed already. No matter how much you frame it, the king + knight + knight combination on their own cannot deliver a checkmate, even Magnus Carlsen would never be able to accomplish this. Read Resigning in Chess - Is it ever ok to resign in chess? If we are talking about two bishops then yes, there are many ways to win with that combination, but checkmating with two knights is a different thing. It is impossible to win with two knights (get a checkmate) since the king will either have some way to escape or it is a stalemate, the knight just doesn’t have as much range as the two bishops. A checkmate is theoretically impossible with only two knights and a king It doesn’t matter if it’s a knight, bishop, or rook, as long as the opponent can move other pieces / pawns you can win with two knights. If you continue to play with a pawn and two knights it will be a stalemate at best, it is theoretically impossible to get a checkmate then.īut if we are talking about two knights only, the opponent having a pawn is the only way to win, this is also true if the opponent has other pieces that it can move. If you ever end up in a position where you have to win with king + knight + knight + pawn, you should just push the pawn and bring out a queen. Take note that if you have a pawn, you cannot checkmate with only a knight + knight and a king without doing a promotion, the best that this can do is stalemate. However if there are beginners here it is important to note that you can also deliver a checkmate if you have a pawn, you can just push it to victory. This is because the king + knight + knight can drive the enemy king into the corner, this will cause the enemy king to be trapped. Here is the thing, two knights and a king can actually deliver a checkmate if the opponent has at least a pawn.

This revelation posed a question: how can a modern artifact be stuck in an Ordovician rock? Some believe that the ancient concretion may have formed around the hammer due to soluble minerals. But when the rock was examined, it was determined to be over 400 million years old. It is similar to the tools manufactured in the region during the late 1800s. The six-inch-long hammerhead consists of 96.6% iron, 2.6% chlorine, and 0.74% sulfur. About a decade later, their son broke open the rock exposing the hammerhead concealed within the rock. Suddenly, they spotted a piece of loose rock from which a bit of wood was poking out. In 1936, Max Hahn and his wife were out walking near Red Creek in London, Texas. Others suggest that they were just containers used to hold papyrus scrolls. ( 1, 2) 2 Baghdad Battery The Baghdad Battery is a clay pot believed to be used for electroplating metal objects around 220 CE, but it is sometimes considered as a myth since there was no electricity during that period. According to them, the patterns formed over the stone is nothing but a random, crystallographic effect. Some researchers insist that the stone is not artificial as the layering of one mineral over another often occurs in nature. The three-layered composition of the Dashka Stone indicates that it was artificially made by an ancient civilization with both highly technical and cultural levels. The first layer is of cement or a ceramic compound based on dolomite, the second layer is diopside glass enriched with silicon, and the third layer is made of a calcium-porcelain mixture. That’s why it is also known as the “Map of the Creator.” Also, there are numerous inscriptions on the map which have not been deciphered yet.Īnother intriguing fact about the Daksha Stone is that it is not entirely made of a uniform material. The accuracy with which the map is created and the perspective indicate that it was created from an aerial view. According to Chuvyrov, the map marks various waterworks, dams, and water intakes. It also indicates the location of Ufa, the capital of Bashkortostan. Patterns on the stone show a highly accurate topographical map of Bashkortostan, Russia. The results achieved by examining the patterns on the Dashka Stone left the researchers stunned. After discovery, the 907 kg stone was brought to Bashkir University, Russia, where it was examined by Alexander Nikolayevich Chuvyrov, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Science, and his team.
