The workaround would be to shift-click-drag, but that doesn't work either. The cursor just moves to the other end, with no highlighting. It works on every editing app I've ever used. The way I usually do it is to click at one end of the selection, then shift-click at the other end. A much worse behavior is in trying to highlight a section of text.
